Our
History
Heritage, conservation, and wine
Visit the site where an ambitious Hungarian nobleman named Count Agoston Haraszthy introduced European wines to America in 1837, later forming California’s first corporate winery, Buena Vista Viticultural Society. When Antonia and Frank Bartholomew purchased the property in 1943, Antonia vowed to “return the great name of Haraszthy and his tradition of fine winemaking to the wine trade.”
And that is precisely what she did. She and Frank also dedicated themselves to preserving and improving the property — including the rolling hills, the wine caves, the mini Golden Gate Park, the “Cat Lady’s Castle” — and its rich history. She wanted others to continue to experience the same joy and fulfillment it had brought to their lives.
To ensure the property would remain accessible to the public, Antonia and Frank established what is now the Bartholomew Foundation, which includes a mandate for an operational winery. The Bartholomew Estate Winery produces 3,000–5,000 cases annually, with four estate varietals and 11 wines. These wines are available exclusively at the winery or through our wine club (and, occasionally, at one of our beloved Sonoma restaurants).
The winery is 100% foundation-owned, with all proceeds supporting the park.
Maintaining the property’s gardens, wildlands, and historic legacy is an ongoing and costly endeavor, making the winery’s success essential to the park’s survival. Every sip ensures this glorious place will continue to thrive and welcome you again and again.
